Mind in Vitro is a US National Science Foundation Expedition in Computing led from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Its aim is to make living-neuron computing experimentally programmable, scalable and reproducible through shared modular hardware and software.
A 2024 Advanced Science paper describes modular electrophysiology platforms developed for in-vitro neural networks. The broader programme combines cell engineering, interfaces, control, information theory and robotics.
Why it belongs in a computing database
A field cannot scale if every laboratory first has to invent its own electrode hardware, stimulation stack and data acquisition system. Standardised experimental platforms make replication and cross-lab comparison possible, which is especially important for biological substrates that vary naturally.
What to watch
The programme explicitly targets biological processors that can be fabricated, modelled, programmed, scaled and embodied. That makes its future benchmarks and open tooling more important than any single demonstration.
