Schematic of brain organoid reservoir computing
Brainoware architecture: encoded stimulation enters the organoid; recorded neural dynamics feed an electronic readout.

Brainoware coupled a brain organoid to a high-density multielectrode array and used its neural dynamics as the reservoir in a reservoir-computing architecture. Spatiotemporal electrical stimulation encoded inputs; recorded neural activity supplied the state used for downstream readout.

The 2023 Nature Electronics paper demonstrated speech recognition and nonlinear-equation prediction and reported nonlinear dynamics, fading memory and training-related changes in functional connectivity.

Evidence status

Peer-reviewed research demonstration. It establishes that a brain organoid can participate directly in reservoir computation, not that organoid hardware is generally superior to electronic reservoir systems.
