Some biological computing systems use human neurons. Others use mouse or mixed neural cultures. Human neural cells used in these experiments are generally generated from stem-cell lines; intact neural tissue from a person's brain is unnecessary.
Why use human cells?
Human induced pluripotent stem cells can be differentiated into neural cells and brain organoids. This provides a renewable route to human neural tissue for research and can support disease-specific or donor-specific models.
Which current systems use them?
Brainoware used human iPSC-derived brain organoids. FinalSpark provides remote access to human neural organoids. DishBrain reported experiments with both human iPSC-derived and mouse cortical cells.
Why species matters scientifically
Human and mouse cultures differ in development, cell composition and experimental preparation. A useful benchmark should record cell source, differentiation protocol, culture age and biological replication because living-neural substrates are not interchangeable.
Consent and governance
Human-derived organoid research raises questions about donor consent, future uses of cell lines and the possibility that increasingly sophisticated neural systems could require additional oversight. These issues are already part of the organoid-intelligence research programme.
